If you’re flying within the U.S. today, consider this your friendly reminder to check your flight status before putting on your airport outfit, grabbing your Starbucks, and confidently heading out the door thinking everything is running on time.
Because aviation has been…aviation-ing this week.
According to live data from FlightAware, there have already been hundreds of flight delays across the United States today, along with dozens of cancellations. As of the latest update checked this afternoon, FlightAware reported:
- 683 delays within, into, or out of the U.S.
- 35 cancellations within, into, or out of the the U.S.
- 8,111 total delays worldwide

Meanwhile, the FAA’s Daily Air Traffic Report says weather continues to be one of the biggest troublemakers today (shocking absolutely no one who has flown through South Florida in spring or summer).
The FAA is currently warning travelers about:
- Gusty winds impacting operations around:
- Boston (BOS)
- Chicago (ORD)
- Denver (DEN)
- Las Vegas (LAS)
- Thunderstorms potentially slowing flights in:
- Washington, D.C.
- Orlando (MCO)
- Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
- Miami (MIA)

Now, to be clear: this does not mean air travel has completely descended into chaos. Airports are still operating, flights are still departing, and as a traveler you may still get where you’re going today without major issues.
But this does mean:
- Your “quick layover” may suddenly become less quick.
- Your gate assignment may flip flop.
- And your flight app may drive you crazy for the next several hours.
What You Should Do Right Now

If you’re flying today or tomorrow, here are a few smart moves:
Check Your Airline App Frequently
Not just once. Weather delays and gate changes can happen rapidly, especially in busy hubs and storm-prone regions.
Avoid Tight Connections
This is not the week for a 42-minute layover in Atlanta while wearing sandals and carrying emotional optimism. If you still have time to adjust your flights, giving yourself more buffer time could save you a lot of stress.
Keep Essentials in Your Carry-On
Medication, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks… all of it. Because nothing builds character quite like an unexpected overnight delay with only a half-eaten airport granola bar and 4% battery life.
Morning Flights Usually Win
Earlier departures are generally less affected by the domino effect of delays that build throughout the day. Translation: the 6 AM travelers may not look happier, but operationally speaking, they often are.
A Quick Reminder About Weather Delays
One important thing travelers don’t always realize: Sometimes your city has perfectly clear skies, but your flight is still delayed because the incoming aircraft is coming from a weather-affected airport elsewhere in the country.
So if your sunny Miami flight is delayed because of storms in Chicago… unfortunately, that’s very normal in aviation operations.

Final Thoughts
Travel days can already feel stressful enough without surprise delays thrown into the mix. The good news is that most disruptions today are weather-related slowdowns rather than widespread shutdowns.
A little flexibility, extra patience, and checking your flight status early can go a long way.
