Check Sargassum Risk Before You Book Your Beach Vacation
As a travel advisor, and someone who loves a good beach vacation, I know how disappointing it can be to arrive at a beautiful resort only to find the shoreline covered in piles of smelly sargassum (a form of seaweed).
This Sargassum Risk Finder was designed to help travelers understand which resorts and destinations tend to experience more (or less) sargassum during different times of the year. Use it as a planning tool, not a guarantee, to help improve your odds of finding the crystal-clear beach you’ve been dreaming about.

📷 Live Beach Cameras for Mexico
Want one more way to check current beach conditions? These webcam directories can help you view
beaches and panoramic views throughout Mexico before you travel. Depending on the location, you may
be able to find cameras for a region, nearby hotel zone, or resort area.
Tip: Search for your destination, nearby town, hotel area, or resort region to see
whether a live camera is available. Not every resort has its own camera, but many popular beach
destinations throughout Mexico do.

GOOD TO KNOW
Frequently Asked Questions
A few things to know before you use the finder to check potential sargassum risk for your trip.
When is sargassum season?+
There isn’t one exact start and end date that works for every destination,
but sargassum tends to be more of a concern from spring through
summer and into early fall in many parts of the Caribbean and
Mexican Caribbean.
Conditions can vary a lot from one year to the next, though. A month that
was relatively clear last year isn’t guaranteed to look the same this year,
which is why the finder looks at seasonal risk rather than treating
sargassum season like a fixed calendar.
Which Caribbean islands get the least sargassum?+
There’s no Caribbean island that can promise you’ll never see sargassum,
and sometimes which side of the island you’re staying on matters
almost as much as the island itself.
Some destinations and sheltered coastlines tend to have lower exposure.
For example, Curaçao’s popular beaches along its protected south and west
coasts generally experience much less sargassum than many heavily exposed
Caribbean beaches.
That’s one reason this tool doesn’t simply hand you a “good island” and
“bad island” list. Your destination, coastline, travel month, and seasonal
conditions all matter.
Is Cancun affected by sargassum?+
Yes. Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean can experience significant
sargassum, particularly during higher-risk parts of the year.
But that doesn’t mean every Cancun beach will look the same on the same day.
Wind, currents, beach orientation, cleanup efforts, and local conditions can
leave one stretch of beach looking very different from another.
So “Cancun gets sargassum” is useful information, but it’s not the whole
story. The timing and exact location matter too.
Can a resort remove sargassum?+
Yes. Many resorts and beach operators regularly remove sargassum
from the shoreline, especially in destinations where seasonal
arrivals are common.
Cleanup can make a big difference in what you actually experience at the
resort, but it can’t stop new sargassum from arriving. A beach that’s
cleaned in the morning can receive another influx later.
That’s why a resort with an active cleanup program may look much better than
a nearby beach even when both are dealing with the same general conditions.
Can this tool predict exactly what the beach will look like?+
No. And we’d rather tell you that upfront than pretend
otherwise.
The Sargassum Risk Finder is designed to give you a
seasonal risk starting point based on the destination,
location, and time of year. It cannot tell you exactly how much sargassum
will be sitting on a particular beach on the Tuesday morning you arrive.
Sargassum moves with currents, winds, waves, and other changing conditions,
so exact beaching is difficult to predict. Use the finder to make a smarter
destination decision, then check recent beach reports or current conditions
again as your trip gets closer.
