You’ve been being everything to everyone for all your life.
You’ve been waking up early, answering emails you don’t care about, showing up to meetings that should’ve been a memo, feeding people who somehow keep needing food every single day, and paying bills like a responsible adult. Frankly? This is all too much for your fragile nervous system.
Let’s be clear: you do not need another motivational quote.
You need a suitcase.
Immediately.
Step 1: Announce Your Departure Like a Legend
When people ask why you’re leaving your job, school, responsibilities, and possibly your group chat, feel free to use any of the following perfectly reasonable explanations:
To your boss:
“I’ve decided to pursue my true calling: sitting on a beach and ignoring Slack notifications.”
To your family:
“This is a medically necessary vacation. My doctor said if I don’t see a palm tree soon, I will emotionally combust.”
To your kids:
“Mom/Dad is going on a quest for peace. I will return with souvenirs and emotional stability.”
To your professor:
“I’m conducting independent research on the effects of sunlight, endless buffets, and room service.”
To your bills:
“Please hold while I heal.”
Step 2: Recognize That You Are the Main Character in Your Life
Let’s talk about you for a second.
- You are tired.
- You are burned out.
- You are one minor inconvenience away from snapping at an innocent stranger in Target.
That’s not because you’re dramatic. It’s because you haven’t been well-rested.
Real rest.
Not “scrolling in bed while thinking about work” rest.
Not “sleeping but still stressed” rest.
I mean turn-your-brain-off, let-someone-else-cook, and make the bed, don’t-know-what-day-it-is kind of rest.
Breaks are not a luxury.
They are maintenance.
Besides, you don’t wait until your car explodes to change the oil. So why are you waiting until your soul is running on fumes?
Step 3: Stop Making Excuses (Yes, You)
Excuse #1: “I don’t have time.”
You have time for emails, errands, and other people’s emergencies, don’t you? You have time. Now make time for yourself. You matter too!
Excuse #2: “I can’t leave my responsibilities.”
You can. The world will continue spinning. Laundry will survive without you. The sun and moon will still rise and set (promise!).
Excuse #3: “I can’t afford it.”
This one I hear you on. Truly. But guess what?
- Affordable travel exists.
- Weekend getaways exist.
- Creative solutions exist.
And guess what? That’s literally what I will help you with…but you do have to reach out (I can’t read minds…yet). If your budget is tight, reach out to me anyway. We’ll see what we can make work. There is always something.
Important Disclaimer (In case it wasn’t obvious)
All of the above explanations are made in fun.
- Please do not actually quit your job without a plan.
- Do not abandon your family without telling them.
- Do not ghost your responsibilities like a rogue backpacker in a movie.
But the message I’m trying to get across to you is serious:
Yes, it’s true that you need a break. Not someday. Not “after things calm down.” Not “next year.”
Now.
You matter.
Your health matters.
Your peace matters.
And rest is not something you get to earn after exhaustion. It’s something you schedule before burnout.
This is your sign:
Stop talking yourself out of it. Stop waiting for the “perfect time.” Stop acting like you’re not allowed to enjoy your life.
- Pack the bag.
- Pick the place.
- Let someone else (i.e., me!) handle the details.
Take the break. You’ve earned it. Because the world will still be there when you get back; but hopefully, you’ll be less tired in it. Let’s make it happen. #offyourhandstravel
