Dubai has a way of making you want to upgrade everything.
The hotel. The room. The dinner reservation. The desert tour. The rooftop experience.
And before long, your “let me just see how much Dubai costs” search has turned into a vacation total that makes you close the browser.
But what if you didn’t have to give up Dubai?
What if you simply stayed somewhere else?
For this OYHT Real Trip Test, I compared an upscale Dubai stay with a luxury beachfront resort in nearby Ajman to see whether staying outside Dubai actually saves enough money to be worth it.
The answer?
It can, but only if you understand what you’re trading.
The Dream: Dubai
Dubai gives you a very specific vacation experience: beaches, skyscrapers, major attractions, luxury hotels, restaurants, shopping and nightlife all packed into one destination.
If you stay around Jumeirah Beach Residence, you’re also putting yourself close to the beach, restaurants, cafés and The Walk. Dubai’s official tourism site describes JBR as a seaside neighborhood built around exactly that mix of beach and entertainment.
That’s why staying in Dubai is convenient.
You’re already where much of the action is.
The Alternative: Stay in Ajman
Ajman is another emirate in the UAE, and it offers a noticeably different experience.
It’s smaller, quieter and much more suited to travelers who want a relaxing beach-resort vacation.
So let’s get one thing out of the way:
Ajman is not a Dubai dupe.
You’re not going to step outside your hotel and see the Burj Khalifa.
But if you want a nice UAE resort, beaches and access to Dubai without necessarily paying to sleep in Dubai every night, it becomes interesting.
The OYHT Real Trip Test
I priced both vacations through Expedia for:
2 adults
Departing Miami
May 1–8, 2027
6 hotel nights: May 2–8
Economy airfare
For Dubai, I used the upscale beachfront Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach.
For Ajman, I used the beachfront Ajman Saray, a Luxury Collection Resort.
Dubai: Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach
The sample package included:
Room: Superior Room, 1 King Bed, Balcony, Partial Sea View
Stay: May 2–8, 2027
Hotel total: $2,201.15
Round-trip flights for 2: $1,657.86
Package savings: $144.56
Package total: $3,714.45
Additional amount shown payable at property: $32.67
The flights were one-stop itineraries in both directions:
Miami to Dubai: 17h 15m
Dubai to Miami: 19h 51m
Ajman: Ajman Saray
The Ajman package included:
Room: Deluxe Room, 1 King Bed, Balcony (View)
Stay: May 2–8, 2027
Hotel total: $1,749.50
Round-trip flights for 2: $1,657.86
Package savings: $191.53
Package total: $3,215.83
And here’s what makes this comparison especially useful:
The airfare was identical.
So we’re not watching a cheaper hotel get wiped out by more expensive flights like we did with Bali and Lombok.
The accommodation is where Ajman wins.
How Much Would You Actually Save?
Dubai package:
$3,714.45
Ajman package:
$3,215.83
Difference: = $498.62
Percentage savings: = approximately 13.4%
What Are You Giving Up to Save $499?
Unlike the Bali/Lombok comparison, you’re not sacrificing an extra vacation day or taking substantially longer flights.
You’re using the same Dubai flights.
The trade-off happens after you land.
If most of your itinerary is in Dubai, you’ll need to travel between Ajman and Dubai.
That means more time in cars, more transportation expense and potentially more frustration if you’re repeatedly going back and forth.
And traffic matters.
Ajman’s tourism authority describes the emirate as offering a gentler pace while still being within reach of Dubai, but how convenient that feels will depend heavily on where you’re going in Dubai and when you’re traveling.
So that $499 isn’t automatically $499 in your pocket.
You have to subtract your additional transportation costs.
What Ajman Does Better
Ajman starts making much more sense if you want:
- A quieter beach vacation
- An upscale resort
- Pool and beach days
- A slower pace
- Occasional trips into Dubai rather than daily sightseeing
In other words, Ajman works best when Ajman itself is part of the vacation.
If you intend to wake up every morning, drive into Dubai, spend the entire day there and return to Ajman every night, I’d think twice.
What You’ll Miss
Convenience.
That’s the big one.
At Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach, you’re in the JBR area, where Visit Dubai highlights beach access, restaurants, shops and cafés.
You’re already in Dubai.
At Ajman Saray, you’re getting a luxury beachfront resort experience, but Dubai becomes an excursion rather than your immediate surroundings.
That’s a meaningful difference.
The Splurge + Save Option
This is where I think the smartest itinerary may be hiding.
Instead of choosing six nights in Dubai or six nights in Ajman, consider splitting the trip.
For example:
3 nights Dubai + 3 nights Ajman
Do your busiest Dubai days while you’re staying in Dubai.
See the major attractions. Eat at the restaurants. Explore JBR. Stay out late if you want.
Then move to Ajman.
Spend the last few days beside the beach and pool without paying the Dubai hotel premium.
That’s the kind of compromise I like because you’re not paying extra for convenience on days when you don’t actually need it.
The OYHT Question: Is $499 Enough to Stay Outside Dubai?
For me, this one depends almost entirely on your itinerary.
Choose Dubai if…
Most of your vacation revolves around Dubai attractions, restaurants, nightlife and sightseeing.
You’re paying more, but you’re also buying convenience.
Choose Ajman if…
You primarily want a relaxing UAE resort vacation and only plan to visit Dubai once or twice.
In that case, saving approximately $499 could make a lot of sense.
Split the trip if…
You genuinely want both.
Dubai for activity.
Ajman for relaxation.
That may be the best value of all.
The Cost Nobody Warns You About
Transportation can turn an apparent bargain into a mediocre one.
If you save $499 on your hotel package but spend hundreds of dollars traveling back and forth to Dubai, and several hours of your vacation sitting in traffic, the savings aren’t nearly as impressive.
Always price the vacation you actually intend to take.
Not just the hotel.
The OYHT Verdict
Ajman isn’t a cheaper version of Dubai.
And I wouldn’t sell it to you that way.
It’s a quieter UAE beach destination that can give you an upscale resort stay while keeping Dubai within reach.
In our sample Expedia search, staying at Ajman Saray saved approximately $499, or about 13.4%, compared with staying at Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach.
Would I give up staying in Dubai to save $499?
If I planned to spend nearly every day sightseeing in Dubai?
Probably not.
If I wanted a resort vacation with one or two Dubai days?
Absolutely worth considering.
And that’s the point of this series.
Sometimes the affordable alternative genuinely makes sense.
Sometimes the real thing is worth paying more for.
Your job isn’t to automatically choose the cheaper destination.
It’s to figure out which experience you’re actually paying for, and whether the savings are worth what you’ll give up.
Sample Expedia package pricing was researched recently for May 1–8, 2027 travel and is included as a real-world example only. Airfare, hotel rates, availability, taxes, fees and package discounts can change. Always check current pricing for your exact dates and departure city before booking.
A quick note about the numbers: These comparisons focus mainly on the Expedia flight + hotel package prices shown for our sample dates. They do not necessarily include every trip expense, such as airport or island transfers, meals not included with the hotel, activities, local transportation, tourist taxes, resort fees, baggage charges, or other costs payable at the destination. Before deciding which trip is truly cheaper, price the full itinerary based on how you actually plan to travel.
