You may already know to check your flight status, hotel loyalty account, and credit-card benefits before a trip.
But there’s another travel status that’s easy to overlook:
Your rental-car status.
And if you rent cars at airports, this one could save you time and make pickup considerably less painful.
Hertz offers a Gold Plus Rewards status match for eligible members who hold qualifying status with select competing rental-car loyalty programs.
In other words, you may not have to start at the bottom simply because you’re switching rental companies.
Your flight may have connections. Your status doesn’t need one.
Why Rental-Car Status Is Worth Checking
Rental-car pickup can be one of the least enjoyable parts of a trip.
You get off the plane tired. You collect your luggage. You find the rental shuttle. Then you reach the counter and discover that everyone else’s flight apparently landed at the same time.
Hertz says Gold Plus Rewards members can receive benefits such as:
- Members-only rates
- The ability to skip the counter at select locations
- Access to Hertz Ultimate Choice at participating locations
- Points toward future rental days
- Additional benefits and upgrades based on loyalty tier
So rental-car status isn’t merely a decorative title beside your name.
At the right location, it may help you spend less time standing in line and more time actually going somewhere.
What the Hertz Status Match Can Give You
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards has three primary levels:
- Gold
- Five Star
- President’s Circle
Hertz’s current status-match chart shows that qualifying competitor statuses may be matched to either Five Star or President’s Circle.
For example, Hertz currently lists these potential matches:
Potential Five Star matches
- Avis Preferred Plus with fewer than 25 rentals
- Enterprise Plus Silver or Gold
- National Executive
- Sixt Gold or Platinum
- Europcar Privilege Executive
Potential President’s Circle matches
- Avis President’s Club
- Enterprise Plus Platinum
- National Executive Elite
- Sixt Diamond
- Europcar Privilege Elite
The eligible programs and tiers can change, so check the live chart before applying.
Status matching isn’t “tell Hertz you travel a lot and hope for the best.” You’ll need qualifying status and supporting documentation.
What Five Star Status Includes
Hertz currently advertises the following Five Star benefits:
- 25% more points toward free rental days
- The ability to skip the line at select locations
- Members-only rates
- A complimentary additional driver, subject to the applicable terms
- A wider selection of premium vehicles
- Complimentary vehicle upgrades, subject to availability and exclusions
At locations offering Hertz Ultimate Choice, your tier may give you access to a designated vehicle section based on your status and the car class you reserved.
That can mean more choice and less standing at a counter while someone tries to convince you that your suitcase needs a luxury SUV.
What President’s Circle Status Includes
Hertz lists these President’s Circle benefits:
- 50% more points toward free rental days on qualified rentals
- A guaranteed one-car-class upgrade at participating locations, up to a full-size vehicle
- Access to the President’s Circle section at participating Hertz Ultimate Choice locations
- A dedicated President’s Circle customer-service line
The upgrade benefit comes with restrictions. It applies at participating locations, is limited to one vehicle class, has a maximum upgrade to a full-size vehicle, and doesn’t apply to certain reservations such as Manager’s Special rentals.
In other words, President’s Circle status may improve your rental. It doesn’t turn an economy-car reservation into a presidential motorcade.
The Shortcut: Check Your Existing Status Before You Book
Before reserving your next rental car, log into any rental-car loyalty accounts you already have.
You may have qualifying status with:
- Avis
- Enterprise
- National
- Sixt
- Europcar
Then compare your current tier with the official Hertz status-match chart.
It’s also worth reviewing your premium credit cards, hotel programs, airline memberships, and employer travel benefits. Some of them may provide Hertz status or a faster route to status directly.
However, don’t assume every status benefit qualifies for Hertz’s public status-match offer. The match is limited to the competitor programs and tiers Hertz accepts under its current terms.
Your credit card may have benefits. Hertz still wants receipts.
How Long Does Matched Hertz Status Last?
According to Hertz’s current terms, approved matched status remains valid through December 31 of the second calendar year following approval.
For example, suppose Hertz approves your status match in September 2026.
The matched status would remain valid through:
December 31, 2028
The calculation is:
- Approval year: 2026
- First following calendar year: 2027
- Second following calendar year: 2028
After that, you must meet Hertz’s standard qualification requirements to retain the tier.
That’s a potentially useful window if you have several trips planned over the next two years.
One successful match could improve more than one rental rather than disappearing after a single vacation.
Can Hertz Status Save You Money?
Possibly—but not necessarily by lowering the original rental price.
Rental status may create value through:
- Faster point earning
- Complimentary upgrades when eligible
- A wider vehicle selection at participating locations
- Members-only rates
- A qualifying complimentary additional driver
- Less temptation to accept an unnecessary upgrade at the counter
Hertz states that Gold Plus Rewards points are earned on the qualifying base rental rate. Taxes, fees, and optional products don’t earn points.
Five Star members earn 25% more points, while President’s Circle members earn 50% more points on qualifying rentals.
For example, if a qualified rental earns 500 standard points:
Five Star: 500 + (500 × 25%) = 625 points
President’s Circle: 500 + (500 × 50%) = 750 points
That faster earning may help you reach a future reward rental sooner.
Still, never reserve a smaller vehicle than you truly need because you’re expecting an upgrade. Availability, participating locations, vehicle limits, and reservation exclusions all matter.
Book enough seats and luggage space for your actual group.
Hope is not a vehicle category.
How to Request a Hertz Status Match
Before applying, make sure you already have a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards account. Enrollment is free through Hertz.
Then visit the Hertz status-match page and provide the requested information, which may include:
- Your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number
- Your competing rental-company membership information
- Proof of your current competitor status
- Supporting account documentation or a status screenshot
Make sure your evidence clearly shows your name, loyalty program, and current tier.
A mysterious screenshot containing only the words “Executive Elite” may not be the compelling case you think it is.
Important Eligibility Rules
Hertz currently states that its status match:
- Is available only for select competitor loyalty statuses
- May provide status up to President’s Circle
- Is limited to members who have never previously used the Hertz status match, or whose last match occurred more than five years ago
- Remains valid through December 31 of the second calendar year following approval
- Requires members to meet the normal tier requirements afterward to retain status
Approval isn’t guaranteed simply because you submit the form.
Wait until Hertz confirms the match before booking a rental based on expected elite benefits.
Getting Status Isn’t Enough—Use It Correctly
Having Hertz status won’t help much if your reservation isn’t attached to your membership.
Before pickup:
- Confirm your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number is included in the reservation.
- Book while signed in to your Hertz account.
- Complete any required online check-in steps.
- Verify whether your pickup location offers skip-the-counter service or Ultimate Choice.
- Review your reservation’s vehicle class and upgrade eligibility.
- Confirm that your driver’s-license and payment information are current.
Hertz notes that skip-the-line service and vehicle choice are available only at select locations.
Don’t arrive at a tiny neighborhood rental office expecting an airport-sized President’s Circle lot.
There may be a circle. It may contain three cars.
Who Should Check for a Status Match?
This shortcut is especially worth checking if you:
- Already have elite status with another rental-car company
- Rent cars at major airports
- Rent more than once or twice a year
- Prefer choosing your vehicle when that option is available
- Travel with children, groups, or substantial luggage
- Want to earn rental rewards faster
- Strongly dislike rental-car counters
Even an occasional renter may benefit if several upcoming trips fall within the matched-status period.
The application takes little effort. The rental counter has already taken enough.
The Bottom Line
Rental-car status matching is one of those quiet travel shortcuts that can make a noticeable difference without changing your entire trip.
You may not receive an upgrade every time. Not every location offers the same benefits, and every competitor status won’t qualify.
But an approved Hertz status match could help you:
- Skip the counter at eligible locations
- Choose from a better vehicle section
- Earn points faster
- Receive qualifying upgrades
- Avoid making rushed and expensive decisions at pickup
Before your next rental, don’t just compare prices.
Check your status.
The upgrade shortcut you’re looking for may already be parked inside a loyalty account you have.
