Airport security with kids can feel like a whole event before your vacation even begins.
You’re trying to keep track of boarding passes, shoes, electronics, snacks, strollers, carry-ons, stuffed animals, and at least one child who always needs to use the bathroom right when the line starts moving.
So when there’s a legitimate way to make that part of your trip a little smoother, it’s worth knowing about.
Here’s the travel perk you may not be aware of: your TSA PreCheck membership may help your kids move through the TSA PreCheck lane with you.
According to TSA’s family guidance, children 17 and under can join an enrolled adult in the TSA PreCheck lane for free when they’re traveling on the same airline reservation and when TSA PreCheck appears on the child’s boarding pass.
That means one approved TSA PreCheck membership in your family may help more than just the person who applied!
Why this matters for your family trip
TSA PreCheck can make the airport security process feel less stressful because eligible passengers usually don’t have to remove their shoes, belts, or light jackets, and you can generally leave laptops and 3-1-1 liquids inside your carry-on.
When you’re traveling with kids, that can be a big deal.
- Less unpacking.
- Less re-packing.
- Less scrambling.
- Less time trying to keep everyone calm while the line inches forward.
And if your child’s boarding pass shows the TSA PreCheck indicator, they may be able to go through the TSA PreCheck lane with you instead of splitting up or having your whole family use the standard security line.
The important rule: Check the boarding pass
This is the part you don’t want to miss.
Your child can only use the TSA PreCheck lane with you if TSA PreCheck appears on their boarding pass.
Being on the same trip isn’t always enough. TSA specifically says the child 1) must be on the same airline reservation, and 2) the TSA PreCheck indicator needs to show on the child’s boarding pass.
So before you head to the airport, take a moment to check everyone’s boarding passes.
Look for “TSA PreCheck,” “TSA PRE,” or the TSA PreCheck logo near the top of the boarding pass. If it appears on your child’s boarding pass, you should be in better shape to use the TSA PreCheck lane together.
How to help your kids get TSA PreCheck on their boarding pass
To give your family the best chance of using this benefit, make sure the enrolled adult’s Known Traveler Number (KTA) is added to the airline reservation before check-in.
You’ll also want your child to be on the same airline reservation as the enrolled adult. If you booked separate reservations, used points for one person, booked through different platforms, or added someone later, the TSA PreCheck indicator may not appear for everyone.
Before your trip, log into your airline account or reservation and confirm:
- Your Known Traveler Number is saved correctly.
- Your name matches your TSA PreCheck profile.
- Your child is listed on the same reservation when possible.
- Everyone’s boarding pass is checked before you leave for the airport.
What about teens?
This rule is especially helpful for families with teens because TSA’s current guidance includes children 17 and under.
However, once your child turns 18, they’ll need their own Known Traveler Number to use TSA PreCheck. So if your teen is getting close to 18, it may be worth planning ahead, especially if your family travels often.
Is TSA PreCheck worth it for your family?
For many families, yes.
If you fly even a few times over a five-year period, TSA PreCheck can be one of those small upgrades that makes the airport feel less chaotic. And when your children can use the TSA PreCheck lane with you for free under TSA’s family rules, the value can stretch further than you might expect.
It doesn’t guarantee that every airport experience will be perfect. Lines can still vary. TSA can still make screening decisions at the checkpoint. And you still need the TSA PreCheck indicator on the boarding pass.
But if you’re planning a family vacation, this is one of those “know before you go” perks that can make your travel day feel a little easier.
