You’ve seen Bali all over Instagram.
Private villas. Floating breakfasts. Infinity pools overlooking rice fields. Beach clubs. Flower baths. Gorgeous temples. Tropical beaches.
And somewhere between saving your 47th Bali Reel and actually pricing the trip, you may have had an unfortunate realization:
Getting to Bali from the U.S. can get expensive.
So naturally, you start looking for alternatives. And one destination you’ll probably come across is Lombok, the Indonesian island sitting just east of Bali.
Lombok is frequently promoted as a quieter, less expensive alternative to Bali. And technically, there’s truth to that. But when I actually priced both vacations from the U.S., something very interesting happened.
The “cheaper Bali” wasn’t always the cheaper trip.
Let’s talk about it.
The Dream: Bali

Bali is popular for a reason.
You don’t just get beaches. You get temples, waterfalls, rice terraces, restaurants, wellness experiences, nightlife, luxury resorts, villas and a culture that’s distinctly Balinese.
Indonesia’s official tourism site highlights Bali’s combination of tropical scenery, art, spirituality and cultural experiences, including Ubud and the sacred Tirta Empul Temple.
That’s important because before you replace Bali with somewhere cheaper, you need to figure out what you actually want from Bali.
If it’s specifically Bali, that’s one thing.
If you mainly want a beautiful Indonesian island, tropical beaches, great accommodations and outdoor adventures?
Now we can talk about Lombok.
The Alternative: Lombok

Lombok sits directly east of Bali, but it isn’t Bali 2.0.
Indonesia’s official Lombok travel guide highlights the island’s beaches, Mount Rinjani, waterfalls, diving, snorkeling and traditional Sasak villages. You also have access to the famous Gili Islands off Lombok’s northwest coast.
And once you’re there, Lombok generally does cost less.
According to Budget Your Trip’s traveler-spending comparison of Bali and Lombok, travelers spend an average of about $79 per person per day in Bali versus $55 in Lombok.
That’s:
$79 – $55 = $24 less per person per day
For two people over seven days:
$24 × 2 × 7 = $336
So yes, Lombok can be cheaper once you get there.
But that’s not the same thing as saying your vacation will be cheaper.
And that’s where things get interesting.
The OYHT Real Trip Test
Instead of comparing random hotel rates or telling you that a meal costs less in Lombok, I wanted to see what would happen when you actually tried to book the trip.
So I priced sample Expedia packages for two adults traveling in May 2027.
For the hotels, I compared the upscale beachfront Maya Sanur Resort & Spa in Bali with Katamaran Hotel & Resort in Lombok.
Then I tested the trip from two U.S. airports.
And the results were not what you might expect.
Please note: Why do the dates below look different?
We searched for the same May 1–8, 2027 travel window, but because Indonesia is far ahead of the U.S. time zone and the flights take more than 20–30 hours, you don’t arrive the same day you leave. In this example, the Bali itinerary arrives May 2, while the longer Lombok routing doesn’t arrive until May 3. Expedia automatically adjusted the hotel check-in dates to match the actual arrival dates—so the “wonky” dates are part of the real travel experience, not a mistake.
Test #1: Flying From Miami
For our Miami test, both trips resulted in five hotel nights because of the amount of time it takes to reach Indonesia.
Bali
Hotel: $1,671.10
Round-trip flights for two: $4,062.74
Expedia package total after bundle savings: $5,366.85
Lombok
Hotel: $762.80
Round-trip flights for two: $5,197.26
Expedia package total after bundle savings: $5,472.44
Now look at what happened.
The Lombok hotel was:
$1,671.10 – $762.80 = $908.30 cheaper
That’s a huge lodging difference.
But Lombok airfare was:
$5,197.26 – $4,062.74 = $1,134.52 more expensive
So the airfare completely ate up the hotel savings.
Final result:
$5,472.44 – $5,366.85 = $105.59
For this particular Expedia search, Bali was actually $105.59 cheaper than Lombok.
Let that sink in for a second.
You could’ve googled “cheap alternatives to Bali,” read that Lombok costs less, booked Lombok specifically to save money…
and spent more.
That’s why you have to price the whole vacation.
Then I Tried Los Angeles
Miami is a long way from Indonesia, so I wondered whether the result would change if you started from a major West Coast gateway.
It did.
A lot.
Our Los Angeles Bali itinerary gave you six nights in Bali, while the longer Lombok routing resulted in five nights in Lombok.
Bali From Los Angeles
Hotel: $2,005.32
Flights for two: $2,220.46
Package total after bundle savings: $3,917.39
Flight routing: 1 stop each way
Approximate travel time:
Outbound: 23 hours
Return: 19 hours 50 minutes
Lombok From Los Angeles
Hotel: $762.80
Flights for two: $2,540.46
Package total after bundle savings: $3,072.86
Flight routing: 2 stops each way
Approximate travel time:
Outbound: 31 hours
Return: 33 hours 55 minutes
On the surface, Lombok now wins.
$3,917.39 – $3,072.86 = $844.53
That’s approximately:
$844.53 ÷ $3,917.39 × 100 = 21.6%
So the Lombok package was about 21.6% cheaper.
But there’s a catch.
The Cost Nobody Warns You About: Your Time

You aren’t getting the exact same vacation.
The Bali itinerary gives you six nights at your destination.
The Lombok itinerary gives you five.
You’re also taking two-stop flights to Lombok versus one-stop flights to Bali.
And you’re spending substantially more time getting there and back.
So now you have another question to answer:
Would you give up one night of your vacation and spend considerably longer traveling to save about $845?
Maybe!
For some people, $845 is a major difference.
For others—especially if Bali was the destination they actually wanted—the answer might be no.
Welcome to what I call the Vacation-Time Cost.
Money isn’t the only currency you’re spending when you travel.
You’re also spending vacation days, travel hours and energy.
A destination that saves you $500 but requires an extra connection, 12 additional hours of travel and one fewer day on vacation isn’t automatically the better value.
What You’ll Still Get in Lombok
If you choose Lombok, you’re hardly settling.
You’ll still find gorgeous beaches, tropical scenery, upscale resorts, waterfalls, snorkeling, diving and plenty of outdoor adventure.
And if your idea of a perfect vacation involves quieter beaches and beautiful scenery rather than a packed itinerary of famous attractions, Lombok may actually suit you better than Bali.
That’s an important distinction.
The alternative isn’t necessarily second best.
Sometimes it’s simply different.
What You Won’t Get
Lombok can’t reproduce everything that makes Bali Bali.
If your dream involves Ubud, Balinese Hindu temples, Bali’s enormous restaurant and café scene, famous beach clubs, elaborate villas, wellness culture and the unmistakable atmosphere you’ve been watching online for years, you may notice what’s missing.
That’s why I don’t want to call Lombok a Bali “dupe.”
It’s a legitimate destination in its own right.
What If You Really Want Bali?
Then my first recommendation isn’t necessarily to replace it.
Try making Bali cheaper.
Look at different U.S. departure gateways if you’re able to position yourself inexpensively.
Compare package pricing with booking airfare and accommodations separately.
Choose where you splurge.
Eat at local restaurants and warungs instead of turning every meal into an Instagram event.
Mix luxury nights with moderately priced accommodations.
And don’t assume you need the most famous resort, villa or neighborhood to have a fantastic Bali vacation.
In our own test, simply changing the departure airport from Miami to Los Angeles dropped the Bali package from $5,366.85 to $3,917.39, although the two searches weren’t identical in destination-night count.
That’s a difference of:
$5,366.85 – $3,917.39 = $1,449.46
Of course, if you live in Miami, Los Angeles isn’t magically free.
You’d need to add your positioning flight, baggage costs and possibly an airport hotel before deciding whether that strategy actually saves you money.
Again: price the entire trip.
The OYHT Question: Is Lombok Worth the Swap?
Here’s how I’d decide.
Choose Lombok if…
You primarily want beaches, relaxation, beautiful scenery, outdoor adventure and a gorgeous Indonesian getaway—and saving several hundred dollars makes the trip possible for you.
Choose Bali if…
You specifically want the Bali experiences you’ve been dreaming about and the actual price difference for your itinerary is relatively small.
Our Miami test is a perfect example.
I wouldn’t tell you to give up Bali to save money when Bali was actually $105.59 cheaper.
Consider Either One if…
Your priority is simply getting somewhere beautiful.
Price both.
You might be surprised by which destination wins from your particular airport.
The OYHT Verdict

Lombok can absolutely cost less than Bali once you’re there.
But “cheaper destination” and “cheaper vacation” aren’t the same thing.
From Miami, our sample Bali trip actually beat Lombok on total package price.
From Los Angeles, Lombok saved about $845—but Bali gave you an extra destination night, fewer connections and substantially shorter travel times.
So is Lombok the cheaper Bali?
I wouldn’t put it that way.
Lombok is a beautiful destination that may give you many of the things you’re looking for at a lower cost. But if you’re dying to visit Bali, don’t automatically give up on it because someone told you Lombok is cheaper.
Run the numbers first.
Because sometimes the affordable alternative wins.
Sometimes the dream destination wins.
And sometimes the best thing you can do for your budget is stop asking, “Which place is cheaper?”
and start asking:
“Which trip gives me the most of what I actually want for the money I can afford to spend?”
That’s the question that can help you travel more without convincing yourself that a substitute is just as good when, for you, it isn’t.
Pricing and cancellation information was researched recently for future 2027 travel and can change at any time. Always check current pricing for your exact dates and departure city before making a booking decision.
A quick note about the numbers: These comparisons focus mainly on the Expedia flight + hotel package prices shown for our sample dates. They do not necessarily include every trip expense, such as airport or island transfers, meals not included with the hotel, activities, local transportation, tourist taxes, resort fees, baggage charges, or other costs payable at the destination. Before deciding which trip is truly cheaper, price the full itinerary based on how you actually plan to travel.
