Bora Bora is one of those destinations where you can look at the pictures and immediately understand the hype.
That water. Those overwater bungalows. Mount Otemanu rising behind the lagoon.
It’s basically the vacation version of, “Okay, fine. Take my money.”
The problem is that Bora Bora may take a lot of it.
So if you’re dreaming about the South Pacific but Bora Bora is nowhere near your budget, is Fiji a legitimate alternative?
For this one, the numbers were so different that I had to look twice.
The Dream: Bora Bora
Bora Bora isn’t famous simply because it has a nice beach.
Tahiti Tourisme’s official Bora Bora guide highlights the combination of its turquoise lagoon, white-sand beaches, Mount Otemanu and luxury accommodations—including the overwater bungalows that have practically become synonymous with the destination.
That combination matters.
If your dream is specifically waking up over the lagoon with Mount Otemanu in the distance, Fiji can’t recreate that exact moment.
But if what you really want is a beautiful South Pacific resort vacation?
Now we have something to compare.
The Alternative: Fiji
For our Fiji test, I used the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, an upscale beachfront resort on Natadola Bay.
This isn’t a bargain hotel I picked just to make Fiji look cheaper.
You’re still getting a legitimate South Pacific resort experience with a beach, pools, restaurants, spa and plenty of room to relax.
For Bora Bora, I used the InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort.
I especially like this comparison because both are part of the InterContinental/IHG family.
Different islands. Similar hotel family.
Very different bill.
The OYHT Real Trip Test
I priced both through Expedia for:
2 adults
Departing Los Angeles
May 1–8, 2027
Economy airfare
Because of the flight schedules, Bora Bora gave you six destination nights while Fiji gave you five.
That difference matters, so I’m not going to pretend these are identical trips.
Bora Bora From Los Angeles
Hotel: InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort
Stay: May 2–8, 2027
Destination nights: 6
Room: Bungalow
Hotel rate: Nonrefundable
Package total: $11,628.79
Additional amount shown payable at property: $23.32
Flights:
LAX to Bora Bora: approximately 11h 55m, 1 stop
Bora Bora to LAX: approximately 12h 20m, 1 stop
The routing connects through Tahiti before continuing to Bora Bora.
Fiji From Los Angeles
Hotel: InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa
Stay: May 3–8, 2027
Destination nights: 5
Room: 1 King Bed, Garden View
Hotel rate: Fully refundable before April 26
Package total: $4,029.96
Flights:
LAX to Nadi: approximately 14h 40m, 1 stop
Nadi to LAX: approximately 10h 25m, nonstop
Yes.
You read those totals correctly.
How Much Could Fiji Save?
Bora Bora:
$11,628.79
Fiji:
$4,029.96
Difference:
$11,628.79 − $4,029.96 = $7,598.83
Percentage savings:
$7,598.83 ÷ $11,628.79 × 100 = approximately 65.3%
In this sample Expedia search, Fiji cost approximately:
$7,599 less
That isn’t a minor difference.
That’s another vacation.
Possibly several.
But There’s an Important Catch
Bora Bora gives you six nights at your destination.
Fiji gives you five because of the actual flight schedule.
Even after accounting for that, though, the gap is enormous.
Approximate package cost per destination night:
Bora Bora:
$11,628.79 ÷ 6 = $1,938.13
Fiji:
$4,029.96 ÷ 5 = $805.99
So you’re still looking at a very different price level.
What Fiji Still Gives You
You can still get:
Beautiful beaches.
Turquoise South Pacific water.
Snorkeling.
Resort pools.
Romance.
Spa days.
Island excursions.
Gorgeous sunsets.
And a real South Pacific vacation—not some watered-down substitute.
What Fiji Doesn’t Give You
Bora Bora’s combination of lagoon and Mount Otemanu is distinctive.
Fiji also doesn’t automatically give you the iconic overwater-bungalow experience that many travelers specifically associate with Bora Bora.
That matters.
If you’ve been saying for ten years:
“I’m going to Bora Bora and staying over the water one day.”
I wouldn’t tell you Fiji is exactly the same.
It isn’t.
The Cost Nobody Warns You About
Bora Bora’s airfare isn’t necessarily the biggest budget problem.
The accommodation itself can become part of the attraction.
That means trying to “save” on Bora Bora by choosing a completely different hotel experience may leave you wondering why you spent all that money getting there in the first place.
Sometimes the smarter strategy isn’t replacing Bora Bora.
It’s shortening Bora Bora.
The Splurge + Save Option
Instead of spending six or seven nights at Bora Bora prices, consider spending a few nights there and combining it with another part of French Polynesia.
You could also mix room categories rather than paying for your dream bungalow every single night.
That lets Bora Bora remain the big bucket-list moment without making every night of the vacation a bucket-list-priced night.
The $1,000 Question Becomes the $7,500 Question
This isn’t:
“Would you pay $500 more for Bora Bora?”
Our sample gap was nearly $7,600.
That’s where Fiji deserves a very serious look.
Choose Bora Bora if…
Bora Bora itself is the bucket-list experience.
The lagoon, Mount Otemanu and the classic Polynesian bungalow experience are why you’re going.
And, this part matters, you can afford it without creating financial stress just to say you went.
Choose Fiji if…
You want an amazing South Pacific vacation more than you specifically need Bora Bora.
For someone who genuinely cannot afford an $11,000+ sample vacation, Fiji makes that South Pacific dream substantially more attainable.
The OYHT Verdict
Can Fiji beat Bora Bora at being Bora Bora?
No.
And it doesn’t have to.
But can Fiji give you a gorgeous South Pacific resort vacation for thousands less?
Our sample pricing says yes.
If Bora Bora is financially realistic and it’s your lifelong dream, save for the dream.
If Bora Bora means you simply don’t travel at all?
Take another look at Fiji.
You may discover that the “alternative” is still one heck of a vacation.
Sample Expedia package pricing was researched in August 2026 for May 1–8, 2027 travel and is included as a real-world example only. Prices, flight schedules, room availability and cancellation policies can change. The Bora Bora and Fiji itineraries also included different numbers of destination nights because of actual flight arrival schedules.
A quick note about the numbers: These comparisons focus mainly on the Expedia flight + hotel package prices shown for our sample dates. They do not necessarily include every trip expense, such as airport or island transfers, meals not included with the hotel, activities, local transportation, tourist taxes, resort fees, baggage charges, or other costs payable at the destination. Before deciding which trip is truly cheaper, price the full itinerary based on how you actually plan to travel.
