You probably already know that you can earn Delta SkyMiles when you fly Delta.
But beginning last August (the 5th of this year to be exact), your Starbucks order can help you earn miles too.
When you link your Delta SkyMiles and Starbucks Rewards accounts, you can earn 1 Delta mile per eligible $1 spent at participating Starbucks locations.
No, one latte isn’t flying you to Paris.
But you bought the coffee. The least it can do is help with the airfare.
How the Delta and Starbucks Perk Works
Starbucks announced that beginning August 5, 2026, eligible members who link their Starbucks Rewards and Delta SkyMiles accounts can earn:
- 1 Delta SkyMile per eligible $1 spent at participating Starbucks coffeehouses
- Double Starbucks Stars on qualifying purchases during eligible Delta travel days
- Access to certain limited-time offers, promotions, and experiences
You’ll need an account with both programs and must link them before expecting your purchases to earn rewards.
Once that’s done, eligible purchases should earn automatically.
No coupon codes. No complicated reward strategy. Just coffee with a connecting flight.
What Changed?
You may have seen older information saying that Delta miles were earned only when you reloaded at least $25 to your Starbucks account.
That was the primary earning structure that began in June 2024.
However, Delta and Starbucks have confirmed that everyday earning returns on August 5, 2026. Linked members will once again earn 1 mile per eligible $1 spent at participating Starbucks locations.
That makes the perk much easier to use.
Instead of thinking about reload amounts, you can simply make an eligible purchase and earn miles.
Your coffee habit finally has a travel itinerary.
How Much Can You Earn?
Suppose you spend $8 on an eligible Starbucks purchase.
The calculation is:
$8 in eligible spending × 1 mile per $1 = 8 Delta SkyMiles
Now suppose you spend about $8 at Starbucks twice a week for 50 weeks:
$8 × 2 purchases = $16 per week
$16 × 50 weeks = $800 in eligible annual spending
$800 × 1 mile per $1 = 800 Delta SkyMiles
Will 800 miles pay for your next vacation?
No.
But it’s better than earning zero miles on the same coffee you were already going to buy.
Travel rewards usually grow one flight, one ride, and one overpriced airport coffee at a time.
What Is a Delta Travel Day?
A Delta travel day is generally a day when you’re scheduled to fly on an eligible Delta flight.
The official Delta and Starbucks FAQ explains that linked members automatically earn Double Stars on qualifying Starbucks purchases made during eligible Delta travel days, provided their SkyMiles number is included in the flight itinerary.
This is especially useful if Starbucks is already part of your airport routine.
You arrive early.
You get through security.
You find your gate.
Then you buy a coffee that costs enough to have its own rewards program.
When your accounts are linked, that qualifying purchase may earn Double Stars.
One important detail: the partnership FAQ states that a Delta flight purchased within 48 hours of departure may not qualify for the Double Stars travel-day benefit.
So, linking your accounts and adding your SkyMiles number before your travel day is the safer move.
How to Link Your Accounts
You’ll need:
- A Delta SkyMiles account
- A Starbucks Rewards account
Then visit the official Delta and Starbucks partnership page and follow the prompts to sign in and connect both accounts.
You can also reach the partnership through Delta’s SkyMiles Partners and Offers page.
The official program terms state that the Delta SkyMiles member and Starbucks Rewards member must be the same person.
You can’t link your Delta account to your cousin’s Starbucks account just because she drinks more coffee than you.
Once the accounts are connected, check that they show as successfully linked before making a purchase you expect to qualify.
The flight may be delayed. Your rewards don’t have to be.
What Purchases Qualify?
The new mileage benefit applies to eligible spending at participating Starbucks coffeehouses.
That wording matters.
Not every purchase, product, location, tax, fee, or other part of your transaction will necessarily count. Specific exclusions may apply under the updated terms.
Starbucks advises members to review the current offer details and terms before relying on a purchase to earn miles.
Because this new earning structure begins on August 5, 2026, the official partnership pages may continue to be updated as the launch date arrives.
Keep your receipt until your miles appear, especially after your first eligible purchase.
What About Starbucks Reloads?
Before August 5, 2026, linked members could earn Delta miles through certain Starbucks Card reloads of at least $25.
The current public FAQ may still display information about that previous reload structure until the new benefit officially begins.
I cannot confirm that the reload-earning option will continue alongside the new 1-mile-per-$1 purchase benefit after August 5.
For that reason, don’t reload money solely to earn Delta miles without first checking the current Delta and Starbucks terms.
Otherwise, you may end up with $100 in coffee money and a rewards balance that has no comment.
Who Should Link Their Accounts?
This perk makes the most sense if you:
- Fly Delta at least occasionally
- Already use Starbucks Rewards
- Buy Starbucks with some regularity
- Stop at Starbucks during travel days
- Want to earn travel rewards without opening another credit card
- Prefer rewards that don’t require additional spending
The key phrase is without additional spending.
Don’t start buying Starbucks just to earn Delta miles. Spending $8 to earn eight miles isn’t a travel hack when you didn’t want the coffee.
It’s just a latte with wings.
The Bottom Line
If you already collect Delta SkyMiles and use Starbucks Rewards, link your accounts before your next eligible purchase.
Beginning August 5, 2026, you can earn 1 Delta mile per eligible $1 spent at participating Starbucks locations. You can also earn Double Stars on qualifying purchases during eligible Delta travel days.
This won’t earn you a free flight overnight.
But the money’s leaving anyway. Make it earn something first.
Link your Delta SkyMiles and Starbucks Rewards accounts, confirm that the connection is active, and let your next coffee run contribute to your next getaway.
